You Are Not Other People's Perception of You

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from trying so hard — for your parents, your children, your partner, your colleagues — and receiving something else on the other side. Rejection. Silence. A mirror that shows you only your shortcomings.

If you've felt that, you're not alone. Every single human being meets this in some way. And it is one of the most painful things about being human. But here's the truth: you are not other people's perception of you.

Every lens is distorted — except one

Each and every human being perceives the world through their own lens. And for the most part, those lenses are not clear. They are shaped by survival, by past wounds, by distorted projections built up over a lifetime. So when someone looks at you — even someone close to you, someone you love — what they see is filtered through all of that. It has everything to do with them and very little to do with you.

As far as the clearest possible truth goes, there is only one lens that sees you accurately. And that lens sees you as pure love. It sees you as an emanation of light. It perceives the truth about you beyond what has been spoken over you, beyond what has been thought about you, and even beyond your own personal idea of yourself.

Nothing that has been said about you is who you are and your own perception of yourself isn't the full truth of who you are either.

Why it still stings

That said — it still hurts. And it's important to acknowledge that first, before anything else.

When people close to you, people you love and want to be seen by, say things that aren't kind — it lands differently than criticism from a stranger. There is an attachment there, a deep human desire to be perceived clearly by the people who matter most to us. And when that doesn't happen, when you try so hard and still receive something that makes you feel like you are not enough — that is a real feeling. It deserves compassion, not bypassing.

So let's first just be with that. It's okay that historically, other people's opinions have left a sting. It's okay to get in touch with the frustration around that, the fear, the sadness. That residue needs to be met before it can move.

The single thing every human being wants

At the core of it, the single thing that human beings want is simply to be appreciated as they are. To be able to let go of the pushing and the striving. To put down all the different versions of themselves they run around as, just to make sure they are seen, safe, and loved. To just be relaxed inside themselves.

And yet so many of us have spent years — sometimes entire lifetimes — looking outwards for just that. Looking to our surroundings for validation, for love, for approval.

You cannot look into the illusion hoping to find the truth about you. The people around you, unless they truly know and embody who and what they are, will not see you clearly. In some ways, we don't even see ourselves clearly. But there is a place inside you that does. And that place is always available.

You don't have to prove anything

Here is something that needs to be said plainly: you don't have to change. You don't have to fix yourself first. You don't have to get over your rage before you can receive love. You don't have to stop feeling alone before love is available to you. You don't have to be fearless, or successful, or have everything sorted out before you are worthy of being received.

Nothing has to happen first. That is the lie — the lie that so many of us keep empowering, keep looping, keep having to live out. The idea that there is a version of you that is acceptable and a version of you that needs work before it can be welcomed.

You are enough here. Right now, exactly as you are. You don't have to prove anything. You can be all of it — the fear, the sadness, the confusion, the joy — and in the deepest truth, none of that surface layer is touching who and what you actually are.

What happens when you stop looking outside

When you genuinely begin to source your experience from within rather than from your surroundings, something remarkable starts to happen. All the pushing melts. All the striving softens. The many faces you've been wearing — the ones designed to make people stay, to make people approve, to make people love you — they begin to loosen.

The ways in which you said what you thought people wanted to hear. The times you stepped away from yourself in order to be next to someone. The trying so hard not to be left behind, and still people left. All of that begins to release, because inside you there is a place and a space in which you are enough. A place that never rejects you. A place that never runs the other direction. A place that always receives you.

It receives you in your rage. In your fear. In your sadness. In your success. In your perceived shortcomings. It is lovingly neutral toward you — always. And if that can be the place and space from which you source your experience, then you are stepping into a genuinely beautiful life.

Letting go of the mirrors

If there are people in your life — past or present — who have played the role of reflecting lack back at you, who have made you feel like no matter how hard you tried it would never be enough, it is time to lovingly set them free.

Not with anger. Not with blame. But with a quiet recognition: I no longer need a mirror of the illusion of lack. I no longer need a mirror of shortcomings or not-enoughness. That chapter is complete.

Because what those projections actually were — the names, the criticism, the bullying, the distorted perceptions — was never about you. It was someone else's unprocessed pain landing on you. And you don't have to carry it anymore. As the mirrors melt, the residue within you melts. And as the residue melts, you start to feel something close to relief. That happened. I lived it out. But no longer.

You are not a problem to be solved

One of the most liberating shifts available to any human being is the recognition that you are not a problem that needs to be solved.

When you stop treating yourself as something that needs to be fixed, your mind can relax. When you feel received within yourself, safe within yourself, your nervous system can relax. And when you relax, you can actually receive your natural state — the fullness, the warmth, the quiet completeness that has always been there underneath the noise.

Being a human being is not the flaw. Moving through human experiences, having difficult days, feeling emotions that don't fit neatly — none of that is a mistake. You are a human being, born in this time, moving through what it means to be one in this time. Even on the days when life challenges the truth of who you are — that is okay. Allow it to impact you. The degree to which it still does is simply showing you what is ready to be released.

The truth that was always there

You may never be "good enough" in somebody else's eyes. You may always fall short by some external standard. But inside you — inside the clear, unobstructed truth of what you are — there is a loving neutrality that receives every part of your humanity. Every thought, every frequency, every emotion, every experience is fully and completely welcomed there.

Start sourcing your experience from within. Stop looking outside for the truth that can only be found inside you, cultivated inside you, committed to by you — in every moment, in every breath.

You are not what has been spoken over you. You are not the sum of other people's perceptions. You are not the story of not-enoughness that you have been carrying.

You are, right now, already lovingly received.

That is where everything begins.
